"Tall Boy"

This shift I handled a funny one.  An upset former customer had went and tried to purchase a "tall boy" but the convenience store was refusing him a sale because we had taken his drivers license when he received a DUI.  He said he had his temporary but they told him it could be 60 days before he gets his photo ID.  He ranted that the officer that wrote him the ticket who was working this shift told him he could contact us if he had issues.  So tonight he calls the police department asking for us to confirm he is over 21 so he can buy his single can of beer, and work on his derby car.  He continued to rant, and I put him on hold to connect the officer to him.   The officer picked up and told him businesses have the right to refuse a sale to anyone and there was nothing we could do to assist him.  He continued cursing and yelling so the officer hung up.   He then called back upset because the officer hung up on him, so another officer spoke to him and explained the same.

We have had a couple shifts where the rain has been terrible and city streets often flood.  I took 2 calls for vehicles in the city street stranded.  One of the calls was from the driver, so I kind of questioned a little more sarcastically as he told me what he did.   He explains he knew it had been raining and water was up, but he still tried down one of the side streets and became stranded.  The officer arrived and we assisted him by calling a tow truck.   I am not sure why you would try going through water in a Cadillac but he did.

Odd thing about alcohol it makes you super smart, an alcoholic last week kept calling because he was short for his beer purchase by cents and they wouldn't sell it to him at what he had.  He returned to the liquor store and tried to pay in all pennies, which they then refused.  He then called several times and was told by the officer the same thing a business can refuse a sale if they wish.

Two weeks ago after I got out of an appointment I wanted to reward myself and so I went to the gas station and shopped around the alcohol selection, I decided on an 18 pack of beer.  I took those cans home and cracked some open.   I like flavor and this light beer was flavorless, how does anyone drink this?  I nearly wiped out that 18 pack in a couple weeks though trying to get rid of it.

Year gone

Another year approaching the threshold entering new explorations, new challenges, the same game.  Coworkers have came and went a few more than normal this past year and likely more  any day now.  I am starting to think more like a go with the flow person and less with a complainer attitude. I won't say this year was easy, there were many 12 hour shifts and shift coverages due to long term illness and resignations.  Nearing 10 years in the seat behind the headset and at times I feel unwanted, unrespected.  Then a day comes up where my officers thank me or have a discussion with me about nothing.  But it shows they are people to who maybe forget dispatchers need asked if they are ok too.

Fall

It seems as the temperatures start to change, so do attitudes among co-workers.  Its almost like the cooler weather triggers animosity.  The simplest of things can trigger someone.  Lately things have been kind of that way anyways.  We were in the process of training one new dispatcher, and he was not quite up to par, and it seemed like everything resulted in a review of how he was handling things, from trying to field calls himself, to just down right ignoring important details from callers.  Then at at some point he decided to quit, as we were just barely ready to release the trainee who was hired before him.   So now we are short staffed again, as such as been the norm for about the last 2 years off and on.  I don't think administration has anything to do with it. Eh, well I actually do.   The past year we have seen a major shakeup.  We saw not only a change of leadership in the agency, we also experienced changes of leadership o...

The Start of something?

I often have wondered if I could ever have the ability to write, or compose something. I can run on once I get to typing and it just comes easy since typing class in high school. I don't know how fast I type anymore but I could do up to 30-40 words a minute back then or faster. I am starting this blog to kinda show my life and log things that happen. I won't use any names or locations as that wouldn't be allowed by state/federal laws. I will do my best to keep the details together but sometimes they might sound totally crazy but it does happen. I work in EMS things are always crazy. Nothing goes totally as planned, nothing happens when you want it to, nothing is worth really going on about. I have been in EMS several years now and work in a mostly rural area with under 25,000 citizens. I never intended to stay in EMS let alone have a job in EMS. It was accidental. I hope you enjoy my life and stories and maybe get a laugh or two a week. Come again and I hope yo...
